Conagra Defeats Smart Balance ‘Great for Cooking’ False-Ad Suit

Conagra Brands Inc. dodged a proposed consumer class action alleging the “great for cooking” and “original” labels on its Smart Balance buttery spread product were misleading following a reformulation in 2022.

The product packaging “is both truthful and clear regarding the constitution of its contents,” the US District Court for the Eastern District of California said in an order docketed Tuesday. The court dismissed Lillian Elliott’s proposed class action but gave her 10 days to file an amended complaint.
