Colorado Court Denies Block to State Trans Students’ Pronoun Law

A federal judge in Colorado refused to temporarily block a new state law that allows students to use their preferred pronouns regardless of their parents’ support, saying a student’s parents failed to show they suffered an injury under the new rule.

House Bill 24-1039 updated the state’s nondiscrimination laws that included sexual orientation, defined to include transgender status, to distinguish sexual orientation from gender identity and gender expression. The April 2024 law requires public school employees to address students by their chosen name, reflecting the student’s gender identity, and says knowingly failing to do so is discriminatory.
