Colorado officials agreed to pay more than $1.5 million to a graphic design artist on Tuesday who challenged the constitutionality of a law that would compel her to violate her Christian beliefs, according to a religious legal group.
Alliance Defending Freedom said in a news release that the officials agreed to pay Lorie Smith over $1.5 million in attorneys’ fees to resolve her 2016 First Amendment lawsuit. The suit targeted the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, which Smith alleged would compel her to provide wedding website design services to same-sex couples, contrary her religious beliefs.
