College Director Loses Race, Sex Bias Appeal Over Promotion Bid

The Community College of Baltimore County defeated a Black female program director’s attempt to revive her lawsuit alleging discrimination caused her to be denied promotion to associate dean, the Fourth Circuit ruled Friday.

The college presented a nondiscriminatory explanation for selecting a non-Black male applicant over Melanie Hood-Wilson for the role, a three-judge panel said, pointing to testimony by the vice president with final authority for filling the opening. He testified the chosen applicant performed better during interviews and checked more boxes on what the college was looking for in an associate dean of workforce solutions, the panel said.
