Chubb Holds Out on Paying New York Archdiocese in Abuse Suits

Chubb Ltd. is refusing to cover liabilities incurred by the Archdiocese of New York in thousands of sex abuse lawsuits until the organization proves it didn’t know about the abuse.

“We can’t fund a settlement under a given policy unless they show us they didn’t know about the actions,” Chubb’s lawyer Jonathan Hacker, a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, told a panel of New York Supreme Court First Appellate Department judges. “The reality is they’re not giving us the information we need to make that determination.”
