Chiquita Wins Trial Reprieve as It Appeals $38 Million Verdict

Chiquita’s fight to overturn a $38.3 million wrongful death verdict won the company breathing room and leverage with a federal judge pausing a July trial while the company appeals the landmark jury award.

Earlier this month, the fruit giant suffered a historic loss, becoming the first US company to lose a jury verdict over human rights violations. Plaintiffs were set for a second bellwether trial next month until Judge Kenneth A. Marra of the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida applied the breaks, indefinitely postponing the trial Monday.
