A prominent Chicago hospital was sued Thursday for negligence after it acknowledged a ransomware attack could have disclosed data involving more than 790,000 current or former patients.
Plaintiffs L.C. and N.C. allege Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago was negligent, negligent per se, and breached an implied contract or in the alternative benefited from unjust enrichment. Plaintiffs and more than 100 persons similarly situated sued the hospital for failing to implement “reasonable and industry-standard data security practices” to protect the data.
The plaintiffs seek class certification; compensatory, punitive, and statutory damages; and attorneys’ fees.
