Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman (R) announced that the commonwealth on Thursday sued Character Technologies Inc., the maker of customizable chatbot app Character.AI, for allegedly preying on and leading children to self-harm.
The lawsuit is the first chatbot harm case to be brought by a state. The lawsuit was filed a month after a bipartisan coalition of 42 attorneys general sent a letter urging more than a dozen technology companies to implement stronger safeguards against sycophancy and delusional outputs. State attorneys general have signaled online safety and privacy for children are key priorities this year.
