California to Start Reporting Courthouse Immigration Arrests

California’s Judicial Council approved a new rule Friday requiring courts to report civil arrests that occur in court facilities, including arrests related to federal immigration enforcement actions.

The rule was passed by the Judicial Council of California during a web conference with the stated goal of understanding the impacts of these arrests on access to justice and allowing the judicial branch to respond to concerns, according to a Judicial Council press release. The rule requires reporting details like the arrest location, arresting agency, if individuals were taken into custody, and if a judicial warrant was presented.
