California Justices Rule Against USC Athlete in Assault Case

The University of Southern California wasn’t required to provide a student athlete accused of sexual assault the opportunity to cross-examine his accuser and witnesses at a live hearing, the state’s justices ruled Monday.

The justices reversed an appeals court ruling that the USC’s disciplinary procedures were unfair to student Matthew Boermeester as he was unable to directly or indirectly question his accuser and the third party witnesses in real time at a live hearing. Boermeester was ultimately expelled for engaging in what the university called “intimate partner violence.”
