California Illegally Delayed Gun Background Checks, Buyers Say

California gun advocates urged a state appeals court panel Wednesday to acknowledge what the state has refused to–that Covid19--tied delays to firearm purchaser background checks, often pushing them beyond the statutory 10-day limit, broke the law.

The state requires background checks on gun purchases. The 10-day turnaround delays ballooned during the early days of the pandemic with the government-ordered shelter in place and the backlog grew to 220,000 applicants, the gun buyers said.

That backlog was in part fueled by firearms sales nearly doubling, the California Department of Justice said.
