California ICE Identification Law Blocked During Full Appeal (1)

A California law requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to identify themselves in public is an unlawful attempt to regulate the federal government, federal appeals court said Wednesday and temporarily blocked it.

A three-judge panel for the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said the state’s No Vigilantes Act—a signature of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s attempts to counter President Donald Trump’s immigration policies—likely violates the US Constitution’s Supremacy Clause.

The ruling prevents the state from enforcing the law, which carries criminal penalties, while the case works its way through the full appeals process, which could take months.
