California Fends Off Trump Administration Suit Over Egg Prices

California defeated a lawsuit from the Trump administration that alleged that federal law preempts the state’s regulations over space accommodations for egg-laying hens, which has driven up egg prices.

Judge Mark C. Scarsi of the US District Court for the Central District of California ruled that the Department of Justice failed to show it faced a constitutional injury from California’s regulations, which include a set of laws imposing quality standards on eggs sold in the state and prohibiting the confinement of hens in spaces where they can’t turn around.
