California Bar Punts on Cop Campaign Donations to Prosecutors

The California Bar punted to the Legislature about whether elected district attorney candidates would be forbidden from taking campaign contributions from police unions.

The bar’s Board of Trustees, after lengthy debate and public comment, declined Friday to pursue proposals by progressive DAs and the American Civil Liberties Union to adopt an ethics rule prohibiting the contributions. The theory behind the move is that it’s an ethical violation to allow DAs to take money from unions whose members could be investigated and prosecuted for civil rights and criminal violations.
