Black Nurse Advances Bias Claims Based on Race, Dying Grandma

Allegheny Health Network must face a contract nurse’s claims that she was forced to quit because of discrimination against her Black race and association with her terminally ill grandmother, a Pennsylvania federal judge ruled.

The woman’s June 5 lawsuit adequately alleged that the Pittsburgh-based health-care provider was her employer under job discrimination law even though she was hired through a staffing company, the US District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania said Thursday. Her pleadings include details supporting that Allegheny exercised significant control over her employment during the 13 weeks that she worked there, the court said.
