Black, Hispanic Massachusetts Cops Earn $40 Million Settlement

Black and Hispanic police officers in Massachusetts will receive a $40 million settlement after they took a discriminatory promotional exam, the Suffolk County Superior Court said Thursday.

The settlement compensates officers who tried to become sergeants but weren’t chosen or were chosen late due to their scores on a multiple choice test.

“The best test-takers are not necessarily the best police sergeants,” Superior Court Justice Douglas Wilkins concluded in October 2022.
