Black Employee Sues Company After Denial of Tuition Benefit

Health Care Service Corporation is facing a new lawsuit in federal court from an employee alleging race discrimination, hostile work environment, and retaliation in violation of Title VII and 42 U.S.C. §1981.

Margo Walker, who is African American, alleges that beginning in 2018, her manager Jackie Smith began scrutinizing her work and issuing unwarranted disciplinary actions due to her race.

Walker complained to human resources about this allegedly discriminatory treatment, but Smith then denied her tuition reimbursement requests in retaliation, the complaint, filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, says.
