Basecamp-Maker 37Signals Defeats Data Sharing Patent Dispute

Software company 37Signals LLC fended off patent infringement claims, persuading a federal judge that the ideas at issue are too abstract for patent protections.

Web 2.0 Technologies LLC and Pennar Software Corp. sued 37Signals, maker of the popular project management platform Basecamp, in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois last year. Their dispute alleged 37Signals infringed two of its patents related to storing and sharing data online.

But the concepts were never specific or inventive enough for a valid patent, the court said Monday, granting 37Signals’ motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
