Axciom Defeats Lawsuit Over Collection, Sale of Consumer Data

Data broker Acxiom LLC defeated a proposed class action alleging it collected and sold the personal data of consumers without their consent in violation of Virginia consumer-protection laws.

Plaintiffs Shelby Z. Roberson and Christopher Johnson failed to show that Acxiom’s sale of consumers’ information to private companies and the federal government constituted a use “for the purposes of trade” as defined in the Virginia statutes, Judge Rossie D. Alston Jr. of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia said Wednesday.

Rossie granted Acxiom’s motion to dismiss.
