AT&T, Verizon Probed by DOJ, EPA Over Lead Cables, WSJ Reports

The Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency are investigating the potential health and environmental risks from lead-covered telecoms cables across the US, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing a person familiar with the inquiry.

  • The EPA’s inquiry directed AT&T and Verizon Communications to provide inspections, investigations and environmental sampling data within 10 days, the Journal reports
    • EPA uses agency’s authority under the so-called Superfund Law, which can compel or undertake major environmental cleanups in certain cases, WSJ reports
  • The DOJ’s civil inquiry by the US attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York is in preliminary stages ...
