Amazon Inc. will have to answer claims that it illegally subjected job-seekers to lie detection technology, a Massachusetts federal judge said Wednesday.
Judge William G. Young ruled that Justin Korn’s lawsuit adequately claimed the e-commerce giant’s Workstyle Assessment qualifies as a lie detector under Massachusetts law, which outlaws the technology’s use in hiring and employment decisions and mandates a particular notice on job applications.
Amazon said it uses the tool to spot “suspicious behavior” like plagiarism, fabrications, or the use of outside assistance and can “impact your current and possibly future Amazon applications,” according to the complaint.
