Amazon Defeats Lawsuit Over Advertising Use of Alexa Recordings

Amazon.com Inc. defeated a proposed class action alleging it collected voice data from its Alexa-enabled devices in violation of its privacy promises and state law after a unanimous Ninth Circuit panel on Thursday affirmed the case’s dismissal.

Plaintiffs James Gray and Scott Horton alleged in their June 2022 lawsuit that Alexa captured their voice data to inform the company’s targeted advertising.

A lower court properly dismissed the lawsuit two separate times after finding that Amazon’s privacy notice made it clear voice data would be used for targeted advertising purposes, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said. ...
