Singer Akon doesn’t owe his former production company attorneys’ fees in connection with the enforcement of a $3.25 million settlement agreement, a New York appellate court ruled Tuesday.
The New York Supreme Court First Appellate Department’s decision reverses a lower court ruling that Upfront Megatainment Inc. was entitled to recover $1.73 million plus attorneys’ fees from Akon after he failed to make a final $750,000 payment on a $3.25 million settlement agreement. The 2018 settlement said if Akon—whose legal name is Aliaune Thiam—failed to make payments, he would have to sign a subsequent agreement and pay attorneys’ fees.
