ACLU Sues South Carolina Over Death Penalty Drug Shield Statute

South Carolina was hit with a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina Wednesday claiming a state statute shielding the identities of lethal injection drug manufacturers violates the US Constitution’s right to free speech.

The advocacy organization filed its complaint in the US District Court for the District of South Carolina against South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and South Carolina Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling. The lawsuit asks the court to block enforcement of the South Carolina statute, S.C. Code Ann. § 24-3-580.
