Ever since Dick the Butcher in Shakespeare’s Henry VI suggested the first order of business in overthrowing the government would be to “kill all the lawyers,” many have recognized that lawyers can serve as a significant obstacle to tyranny.
In “Lawyer Regulation and Accountability Mechanisms: Protecting the Rule of Law,” a session at the American Bar Association’s 51st National Conference on Professional Responsibility, Georgetown Law Center professor Mitt Regan followed this principle forward to 2021, when government lawyers threatened to resign rather than sign a letter to Georgia officials claiming irregularities in the 2020 election.
