Online real estate service Zillow Inc. is suing a rival for allegedly poaching its employees and stealing confidential trade secrets on machine learning technology that recommends homes to users.
Zillow’s complaint, filed April 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, claims Urban Compass Inc. and its unit, Compass Washington LLC, unlawfully hired a handful of Zillow employees to steal its trade secrets, including algorithms that help personalize customer service. Zillow also sued its former senior director of machine learning for allegedly breaching contractual obligations and misappropriating trade secrets before joining Compass.
