YouTube Gets Boost in EU Court Opinion on Illegal Uploads

Google’s YouTube shouldn’t be held liable for copyright-infringing uploads on its platform, an adviser to the European Union’s top court said.

“As EU law currently stands, online platform operators, such as YouTube and Uploaded, are not directly liable for the illegal uploading of protected works by the users of those platforms,” Advocate General Henrik Saugmandsgaard Oe of the EU Court of Justice said in a non-binding opinion Thursday. The court’s decision will come in a few months.
