WordPress Fights to Cut Antitrust Claims in IP Extortion Suit (1)

A California federal judge signaled she’s open to nixing antitrust claims against WordPress.com owner Automattic Inc. and its CEO in a lawsuit accusing them of leveraging trademark law to extort tens of millions of dollars from a software developer.

Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin took issue with the relevant markets proposed by WPEngine Inc., saying the software developer’s arguments might require her to make an unreasonable inference. She declined to rule from the bench on the defendants’ motion to dismiss Thursday during a hearing in San Francisco.
