WIPO Committee Drops Move on Global ISP Liability Standards for Trademark Violations

GENEVA — Members of the World Intellectual Property Organization have rejected the idea of developing global liability standards for internet service providers (ISPs), search engines, and other intermediaries in regards to the infringement of trademarks on the internet.

Representatives from WIPO member countries attending a March 31–April 1 meeting of the organization’s Standing Committee on Trademarks (SCT) were largely opposed to giving the committee a mandate for developing such standards, according to officials who attended the meeting.

Instead, the SCT agreed to examine the possibility of organizing a seminar in the future to examine the issue in further detail.
