Volkswagen’s ‘ID’ Electric Cars Allegedly Infringe Trademarks

Onyx Enterprises, an automotive parts distributor that owns the website CARiD.com, told a New Jersey federal court that Volkswagen of America Inc.‘s upcoming “ID” line of electric cars will infringe its trademarks.

Onyx says it’s one of the largest retailers of automotive products in the U.S., and has sold its products through its CARiD.com website since 2009. It owns federal trademarks for “iD” covering automotive part and accessory sales and related services.

According to Onyx’s Monday complaint, Volkswagen has been denied federal trademark registrations for “ID” and related marks multiple times based on likely confusion with Onyx’s marks. The ...
