VLSI Technology LLC sued the US Patent and Trademark Office for documents relating to the agency’s treatment of several large semiconductor companies, specifically VLSI’s litigation opponent Intel Corp.
VLSI, which was created by private equity giant Fortress Investment Group, has asserted patents that once belonged to NXP Semiconductors against Intel. The plaintiff won two patent infringement verdicts in 2021 and 2022 against the California tech company totaling more than $3 billion, however, Intel has since defeated two of the asserted patents accounting for more than $2 billion in validity challenges at the PTO’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
