Velodyne Sues Rival Over Patented Lidar Tech for Autonomous Cars

Velodyne Lidar USA Inc. has filed a lawsuit against rival Ouster Inc., alleging Ouster lidar sensors use its patented technology.

Velodyne filed the suit Tuesday in the Northern District of California. It alleges Ouster rotating lidar sensors infringe two patents covering a laser-based system best known for helping autonomous cars sense their surroundings, according to court documents.

“Even worse, Ouster knew of and studied Velodyne’s patented technology and products before incorporating the technology into its own infringing products,” said the complaint, which asks for an injunction and compensation.
