USAA’s SafePilot App Targeted by Patent Suit on Driving Data

United Services Automobile Association was hit with a lawsuit alleging its SafePilot mobile app infringes four of a small British company’s patents related to using a mobile device to track driving data and report it to a central system.

York, England-based Auto Telematics Ltd. says the patents cover “the core components” of telematics systems many insurance companies use “to monitor driving performance and offer premium adjustments” based on a driver’s record, according to a complaint filed Wednesday in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas.
