The Federal Circuit upheld a trade panel’s decision that Roku Inc. infringed a Universal Electronics Inc. patent for a device that helps smart televisions connect to both wired and wireless-connected devices.
The US International Trade Commission in 2021 agreed with Universal that Roku had imported TV products that infringed US Patent No. 10,593,196. Roku appealed the ITC’s determination in January 2022, arguing that Universal hadn’t established ownership rights in the patent, and that the protected technology was invalid as obvious based on previously published inventions.
