Universal Can’t Escape Dispute With Juan Luis Guerra’s Old Label

Universal Musica Inc. and Dominican musician Juan Luis Guerra remain embroiled in a copyright infringement case with Guerra’s former record label, after the Southern District of New York found fact issues concerning contract terms March 29.

The court dismissed the claims of Distribuidora de Discos Karen C. por A. over 20 of the 76 compositions at issue that Guerra never transferred, and ruled for Guerra as to 12 compositions that the label admitted to infringing.

Guerra had a long-running business relationship with record label DDK. Guerra and DDK signed multiple agreements and amendments covering their relationship over two decades. ...
