Uniloc Properly Denied Sealing Request in Apple Patent Fight (1)

Patent holding company Uniloc was properly denied the chance to narrow its “grossly excessive” request to seal sensitive information in an infringement dispute with Apple Inc., the Federal Circuit held.

Uniloc 2017 LLC appealed the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California’s refusal to make any of the redactions it sought to documents in the infringement suit. Digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation intervened to support the trial court’s rulings, citing the public’s right to know about Uniloc’s relationship with patent licensees, including SoftBank unit Fortress Investment Group LLC.
