UMG Settles Copyright Termination Lawsuit With Remaining Artists

Capitol Records and parent UMG Recordings Inc. settled the remainder of what started as a putative class action lawsuit by several artists seeking to recapture their copyrights.

Rock vocalists and guitarists John Waite and Joe Ely sued to exercise their termination rights in US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Although Waite and Ely settled their claims in 2023 and 2020, several other artists remained after the artists bid for an interlocutory appeal of the district court refused to let the case move forward as a class action..
