UK Depature Casts Doubt on Future of EU’s Patent Court (1)

The United Kingdom will not participate in a planned European Union-wide patent court, casting a cloud over the tribunal’s future.

The U.K.'s decision to back away from the Unified Patent Court comes as the country is in a transition period after leaving the EU last month.

“Participating in a court that applies EU law and bound by the CJEU is inconsistent with our aims of becoming an independent self-governing nation,” a British government spokesperson said, using an acronym for the bloc’s highest court, the Court of Justice of the European Union.
