TV Owner Gray Accuses Hearst of Infringing News Alert Trademarks

Local TV station owner Gray Local Media Inc. accused its rival Hearst Corp. of infringing its trademarks by using a confusingly similar weather and traffic news alert.

Hearst’s “First Warning Weather” and “First Warning Traffic” marks infringe Gray’s “First Alert Weather” and “First Alert Traffic” marks, according to the complaint filed June 28 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Gray, which operates nearly 200 local TV stations and news affiliates, has been using the trademarks since the early 2000s, registering its weather alert in 2007 and its traffic alert in 2017, the complaint said. ...
