Companies that allegedly licensed the 1980s hit “Hey Mickey” to third parties without the proper rights won’t face singer Toni Basil’s suit in California, after a state appeals court affirmed dismissal of her claims Thursday.
According to the suit, New Razor & Tie Enterprises LLC claimed it purchased the rights to license “Mickey” from a Panama-based company after Basil’s record label went under in 1988. New Razor allegedly signed an agreement with the purported successor in interest to her record label, and then licensed the song and cheerleading-themed video to third parties, collecting the revenue without remitting to Basil.
