OpenAI Sued by Media Outlets Under Digital Copyright Law (1)

Media outlets The Intercept Media Inc., Raw Story Media Inc., and Alternet Media Inc. filed a pair of lawsuits against OpenAI Inc. in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday alleging the firm removed author information from articles in data sets used to train its generative AI.

The news outlets argue that OpenAI and Microsoft Corp., a co-defendant, intentionally stripped authorship titles and other “copyright management information” from stories used to train ChatGPT, a violation of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The AI chatbot has since produced verbatim or near verbatim copyrighted articles, without the corresponding credit, the complaints allege.
