Tesla Wins Patent Cancellation After PTO Stewart’s Remand (1)

Tesla Inc. convinced an administrative tribunal to cancel part of an artificial intelligence patent after US Patent and Trademark Office Acting Director Coke Morgan Stewart ordered the board to review its initial invalidity finding.

The automaker demonstrated that Autonomous Devices LLC’s US Patent No. 11,238,344 covering an AI system for autonomous driving is obvious in light of two prior patents, according to a decision issued April 11 by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. The board also denied Autonomous Devices’ motion to substitute claims, finding the amended claims unpatentable.
