Supreme Court Temporarily Halts Florida Sports Betting Deal

The US Supreme Court has temporarily halted a deal that Florida gaming businesses say gives tribes a monopoly over online gaming in the state.

Although state law prohibits sports betting, the $2.5 billion deal between Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and the Seminole Tribe of Florida was executed under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, a law that regulates gaming on native lands.

Among other claims, a group of Florida gaming businesses say the IGRA doesn’t apply to online gaming. Chief Justice John Roberts agreed to put the deal on hold while the case works its way through the courts. A ...
