Subaru, Staples Face Lawsuit by Maker of Tree-Shaped Fresheners

The company that for more than 60 years has sold tree-shaped air fresheners that dangle from cars’ rear-view mirrors sued Subaru of America Inc. and its business partner Staples Inc., accusing them of infringing trademarks for the Little Trees-branded products.

Car-Freshner Corp. and Julius Samann Ltd., respectively the exclusive licensee and owner of the marks, said Subaru and Staples have sold hats bearing a tree design that’s “virtually identical” to their trademarked design, according to a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.
