Shopify Owes $40 Million for Infringing Website-Building Patents

Shopify Inc. must pay Express Mobile Inc. $40 million after a federal jury in Delaware found its website building tools infringe three patents related to web components.

The e-commerce platform also failed to convince jurors to cancel the patents, according to a verdict reached late Wednesday afternoon in the US District Court for the District of Delaware. Jurors awarded damages as a fully paid-up lump sum.

Shopify sued Express Mobile in March 2019 seeking a declaratory judgment of noninfringement. Express Mobile filed infringement counterclaims later that month.
