Scholastic Inc. infringed two authors’ copyrights protecting their musical adaptation of a book in the “Goosebumps” series by distributing the show’s album’s artwork and sound recordings without consent, according to a federal lawsuit.
The children’s books distributor accomplished a “classic bait-and-switch,” making promises to the authors and then forcing them to enter a “less favorable arrangement” that’s damaged their rights and financial rewards, according to a complaint filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. The company faces nine counts including breach of contract, fraudulent misrepresentation, and copyright infringement.
