Sam Smith Beats Copyright Lawsuit Over ‘Dancing With a Stranger’

Singers Sam Smith and Normani Hamilton fended off a copyright infringement lawsuit alleging their 2019 song “Dancing With a Stranger” took key musical elements of a 2015 song with a similar name.

US District Judge Wesley Hsu ruled Wednesday in Los Angeles that the “melodic phrases” of each song “are not substantially similar,” so Smith and Hamilton couldn’t have copied the older song “Dancing with Strangers,” co-authored by singer Jordan Vincent and music duo SKX under the auspicies of the company Sound and Color LLC.
