Ross Intelligence Asks to Quickly Appeal its AI Fair Use Loss

Ross Intelligence Inc. asked a federal judge to pause its dispute with Thomson Reuters and allow it to appeal a recent order finding its AI-powered legal tool’s ingestion of Westlaw headnotes isn’t “fair use” under copyright law.

Conflicting opinions about fair use and the copyrightability of content produced by Thomson Reuters Enterprise Centre GmbH’s Westlaw service demonstrate the issues require immediate appeal to the Third Circuit rather than proceeding to a jury trial in May, Ross argued in a Tuesday brief supporting its motion for interlocutory appeal filed in the US District Court for the District of Delaware.
