Roland Keeps E-Drum Patent Trial Win, Must Have Damages Retrial

The Federal Circuit upheld a Miami jury’s finding that inMusic Brands Inc. infringed a set of electronic drum and cymbal patents owned by Roland Corp. while wiping out the $4.6 million award and ordering a retrial on damages Thursday.

The appeals court declined to order a retrial of the infringement case or reverse the jury’s 2022 verdict, which found Roland’s four patents werevalid. But the three-judge panel took issue with the testimony on which jurors based the lost profits and reasonable royalty amounts they awarded Roland.
