Reproductive Data Privacy Focus of Pre-Trump Push in Michigan

An eleventh-hour effort by Michigan lawmakers to protect pregnancy and sexual health data signals a renewed nationwide focus on safeguarding reproductive privacy before President-elect Donald Trump enters his second term.

The measure (SB 1082) would give consumers more control over data linked to their menstrual cycles, fertility, plans to conceive, and other facets of reproductive health and limit disclosure of that data. The bill would join states including Washington and Nevada that have bolstered regulations for period trackers and other data handlers that aren’t covered under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
